Named after a legendary Korean composer, the Conservatory is the latest addition to the 30 odd higher education institutions in Pyongyang. It opened in the fall of 2006. The campus consists of three buildings, a dormitory and a student activities center. There three auditoriums including an 800 seat theater and two smaller theaters that can accommodate audience of 60 and 80. Kim Won Gyun was a major composer of revolutionary songs and former member of the Central Committee of the Korean Musicians Union.
