The Reliant Astrodome (originally the Houston Astrodome) is a multipupose stadium located at Reliant Park in Houston, Texas. The world's first air-conditioned domed stadium, it opened in 1965 (briefly as the "Harris County Domed Stadium") and was nicknamed the "Eighth Wonder of the World".
The Astrodome was well-known for a four-story-tall scoreboard called the "Astrolite", composed of thousands of lightbulbs that featured animations; it was removed in the late 1980s to install 15,000 additional seats. It was also the first stadium to feature artificial turf, called AstroTurf, as it was discovered that natural grass lacked sufficient sunlight (in spite of the 'Dome's translucent ceiling) to grow properly.
The beginning of the end came when the Astros team moved downtown to what is now Minute Maid Park. Renamed the Reliant Astrodome in 2002, the facility was closed a few years later due to code violations. In 2013, demolition of some features of the dome happened, including truck ramps and wheelchair access ramps. In 2014, the stadium was renamed NRG Astrodome, even after being partially gutted and partly demolished.
