rowhouse, apartment building
A row of five 5-story (including raised basements) Renaissance-revival residential buildings completed together in 1891. Designed by A.B. Ogden & Son, they are arranged in an A-B-A-B-A pattern, and each clad in brownstone painted different shades. Each has had its stoop and parlor-floor entrance replaced by ground-level entries down a couple steps from the sidewalk.
No. 113 at the east end has its ground floor re-clad in white brick, with a glass door on the left, and two single-windows with iron grilles to the right. The upper floors are painted white. The 2nd floor has three wide windows with molded surrounds; the east window is set a bit farther apart, replacing the original parlor-floor entrance. At the top of the 2nd floor, a wide, rounded and curved base (with some carved ornament at the center and ends) supports the projecting, curved bay of four windows at the 3rd floor. Fluted pilasters separate the outer two windows from the middle pair, and a cornice caps the projecting bay. The 4th floor has three evenly-spaced single-windows topped by hooded lintels, and the top floor has a paired-window bay on the left (topped by a cornice), with a single-window on the right (topped by a triangular pediment). The facade is crowned by a black metal roof cornice with modillions, dentils, and a frieze with foliate ornament.
No. 115 also has white brick at the ground floor, but only around the glass door entrance at the right; the rest of the brownstone facade is painted a cream color. The two windows with iron grilles to the left are spaced closely together. The next two floors follow the paired-window, single-window format, with the single-window on the right replacing the original entrance. Fluted pilasters flank the windows on the 2nd floor, supporting entablatures with dentiled cornices on top. The 3rd floor has a stone surround and small cornice at the single-window, while the paired windows are framed by squared pilasters supporting another entablature with a cornice featuring small modillions. There are panels of three small squares below both windows, the center one of each having a leafy decoration. The 4th floor has three evenly-spaced single-windows with stone surrounds and cornices. The top floor is like No. 113's, with paired windows on the left and a single-window on the right, but with a keystone instead of a pediment. A matching black metal cornice crowns the facade.
No. 117 in the middle matches the "A" design of No. 113. It is painted the same cream color as No. 115, and has rough-faced rusticated stone at the ground floor, where there is a wood-and-glass door on the right. The window framing is all painted green, and the roof cornice is green as well.
No. 119 repeats the "B" design, painted white. The glass-and-metal door on the right (with narrow sidelights) is set in a polished grey granite surround, and there is a double-window at the 2nd floor replacing the former entrance.
No. 121 at the west end is another "A" design, painted brown, with the ground floor like No. 117's.
