St. Peter's Episcopal Church (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / West 20th Street, 340

Gothic church building completed in Chelsea in 1838 to a design attributed to Clement Clarke Moore himself. The parish was formally organized on May 9, 1831, and the original chapel (now the rectory) was the first of three buildings (church, rector and parish hall) to be completed.

The church building, clad in stone, has a bell tower crowned by pinnacles - it was originally flanked by handsome Gothic porches, but these had to be removed in the early 1900s for safety as the wood, covered with a light coating of stucco, had deteriorated. The Church was consecrated on Washington's Birthday, in 1838. The year before the consecration, Trinity Church had presented to St. Peters the historic wrought iron fence and gates from St. Paul's Chapel. This graceful 18th-century ironwork still exists and serves its original purpose.

Most of its original windows were created by Tiffany Studios, though the number seems to change weekly. The others are by J. & R. Lamb Studios.
