Cheswick Generating Station

USA / Pennsylvania / Cheswick /
 power station, coal-fired

Single-unit, coal-fired generation station on an 82-acre site in Springdale, approximately 18 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. Net capacity is 570 megawatts, began commercial operation in 1970, operates as a base-load facility.

It is currently owned by GenOn Energy, though ownership has changed often in recent years. A new scrubber installed in mid-2010 was supposed to cut emissions of sulfur dioxides and airborne particles by up to 98 percent, but by December it had become too corroded to use.

Comments

  • The above paragraph is a bit misleading. The scrubber was fully repaired under warranty by the supplier, was then put back right in service in 2011, remains in service whenever the plant is operating, and does in fact cut SO2 and particulate by 95% to 98%.
