United States Air Force Memorial

Newest Armed Service memorial. The dedication ceremony was held October 14th, 2006.

Easily the most controversial memorial erected in the Washington, DC area since the Vietnam Memorial. The USAF originally wanted to erect this memorial close to the USMC Memorial, which led to years of inter-service fighting.

The final approved site, while not perfect for anyone (least of all visitors) seemed to offer the best compromise. The design itself was changed from a giant five-pointed stainless steel star visitors would walk under to the current "starburst" of polished spires that simulate a high-performance aerial maneuver.
