This area is named after the Fontaine and Maury family before the American Civil War. See Matthew Fontaine Maury (USN) in Wikipedia article. He was known as the Pathfinder of the Seas", was world famous and was honored with many medals, honors, &c. Here some of his family lived -- some of them after fleeing the Civil War in Fredericksburg and Richmond, Virginia.
