USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York
school, Gothic revival (architecture), interesting place, 1913_construction

High school for grades 7-12 which was designed c. 1911 by C.B.J. Snyder, Superintendent of School Buildings for New York City, with decoration by O.H. Bauer. Snyder designed a seven-story brick, limestone, and terra-cotta structure with an imposing arched entrance, paired round-arched Florentine Renaissance windows on the seventh floor, a deep cornice, and a tiled hip roof. A 12-story addition, completed in 1938, was designed by Walter C. Martin.

The incredible interior includes a two-story foyer executed by C.H. Rugg with a mezzanine balcony, and a large skylit auditorium, all designed in Snyder's favorite Collegiate Gothic mode. It features 1930's murals by Barry Faulkner, Robert Knight Ryland, and Salvatore Lascari.

Washington Irving now houses numerous schools, including the Gramercy Arts High School, the High School for Language and Diplomacy, the International High School at Union Square, the Union Square Academy for Health Sciences, and the Academy for Software Engineering. One floor is occupied by a branch of the Success Academy Charter School.
