school, postmodern (architecture)
6-story Neo-Federal-style school/commercial building completed in 1967 for the Grand Street Boys' Association. Designed by Charles Luckman, it is clad in red brick with a tan granite water table at the base. The ground floor has large limestone quoins at the ends, and a broad limestone band across the top. The main entrance is in the center, with slightly-recessed glass-and-metal double-doors next to a window with horizontal metal mullions; there is a metal service door at the west end.
The upper floors have brick quoins and five bays of single-windows with stone sills and lintels. At the 2nd floor they are topped by rounded pediments. A pair of flagpoles projects from around the center window at the 3rd floor, and there are projecting vertical banners attached to the ends at the 2nd-3rd floors. Another broad stone band course sets off the top floors, and the facade is capped by a stone cornice.
The building is occupied by Kaplan, providing test prep for standardized tests and admission requirements. This site mainly serves the international community since another site was opened at 16 Cooper Square in Greenwich Village.
