Saint Paul Island, Pribilof Islands, Alaska

USA / Alaska / Saint Paul /
island, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic district, U.S. National Historic Landmark

2006 population of 460.
The Pribilof Islands (St. Paul and St. George) were discovered in 1786 by Russian fur traders. In 1788, the Russian American Company enslaved and relocated Aleuts from Siberia, Atka and Unalaska to the Pribilof islands to hunt fur seals; their descendants live on St. Paul and St. George islands today.

Formerly a major fur seal hunting community prior to outlawing in 1985, St Paul has evolved into a primary port for the Central Bering Sea fishing fleet, often referenced on "The Deadliest Catch" crab-fishing series on The Discovery Channel.

The Fur Seal rookieries are threatened by tons of marine fishing trash carried by Bering Sea currents that wash up on St. Paul Island every year. See story at "www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,370061,00.html"
