US Highway 83 is a border-to-border highway. Neither of its branch routes (US 183, US 283) actually touch US 83 anymore, although they used to. US 83 starts at the Mexico border with US 77 in Brownsville, TX. It straddles the Mexico border all the way to Laredo, then starts to head north. It passes on the west side of Abilene and continues north through Texas in rather unpopulated areas. It passes through Liberal, KS, Nebraska, South Dakota and ends at the Canadian border near Westhope, ND.

US Highway 277 goes through only Texas and Oklahoma. It starts westward from US 83 in Carrizo Springs, TX. It travels through Eagle Pass and Del Rio before heading north. It crosses Interstate 10 at Sonora, then goes through downtown San Angelo. From San Angelo, US 277 continues north to Abilene where it carries traffic on the west side of the city. Wichita Falls, TX sees US 277 cosigned with I-44. In Oklahoma, US 277 meanders northeast to Newcastle (southwest of Oklahoma City) where it ends at I-44 exit 107.
