I was stationed in Montgomery Barracks (Berlin-Kladow) with the 1st Bn Grenadier Guards from March 1954 until September 1955 with The Berlin Independent Brigade. We took over from the 1st Bn Scots Fusiliers, and handed over to the 1st Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
I had a very nice married Quarter at the rear of the Barracks in Pottensteiner Weg, about 100 yards from the Russian Wire........that MQ gave me my introduction to the Dutch Oven system of Heating - a huge tiled block in the corner of the room from floor to almost ceiling level, with a small midway opening and grate into which was lit the fire using those small blocks of brown coal.
Most Berliners were still suffering the employment restrictions and housing shortages caused by the recent WWII and help in reconstruction was being given by an American led Initiative named 'Op-Union' for the purpose of rebuilding Berlin and creating employement for the hard pressed Berliners. For the first time in my life because of Op Union, I enjoyed the services of a daily home help for the token payment of a mere 7 shillings a wek on my part........this lasted throughout our stay when we moved into the Western Zone until we eventually left BAOR for Blighty in late 1957........happy days!

In 1950 my father, mother and myself returned to Berlin. I was 4. I was born in Shanghai where my parents escaped to in 1939. We lived in a small apartment in the hospital for two years before coming to the USA. I remember playing in the court yard which seemed to me to be very dark and scary. I never knew the history of the Jewish Hospital until I started to write a book on my parents journey. I would love to hear from anyone who can add to the story. contact me at: sterndaddy@comcast.net

Hello JW Berlin, I ran the Berlin Marathon and needed directions to get back to my hotel. I met one of your brothers and 2 sisters outside the Haupt Bahnhoff. They were there with their ''Trolley'' laiden with literiture about Jehovah. My wife is a JW Pioneer and works long hours. Between them, they gave me written directions to get me safely back to my hotel. I took a photograph of them and would like to send them a copy. Is there an email address? Please contact dawndot@hotmail.co.uk if you can help. Danke

If I remember rightly he was a Sergeant at the time, might even have been RMP, I can remember being around the guard room a lot anyhow lol
