Built during the 14th century, the founder of the Joseon dynasty Yi Seong-gye (King Taejo) spent the last years of his life here after abdicating the throne in 1402. After his death, the building was converted into an ancestral shrine. The building was destroyed by the Japanese invasion of the late 16th century and later reconstructed in 1610.
