Osman Sagar, popularly known as Gandipet, is an artificial lake in Hyderabad. The lake is around 46 km², and the reservoir is around 29 km² .It is close to another lake called Himayat Sagar.
Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, Hussain Sagar, Mir Alam Tank and Durgum Cheruvu are the largest lakes in Hyderabad.
Osman Sagar was created by constructing a dam on the Musi River in 1920, to serve as drinking water reservoir for Hyderabad, and also to save the city from floods, witnessed when Hyderabad suffered in 1908. It was built during the reign of the VIIth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan; hence it is named after him.
A princely guest house called Sagar Mahal, overlooking the lake, now a heritage building, was built as a summer resort of the last Nizam. It is located on the banks and has the best view of the lake. Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department, currently, runs the place as a resort. The breeze of the lake is very pleasant, and has been popular with the locals since the Nizam's time.
It is a popular tourist destination, especially after the monsoon season when the reservoir is full, and its resorts and amusement parks are a major attraction.
This lake had served drinking water for Hyderabad city when the city was planned for 500,000 people but now has a population of more than 5,000,000, it is not sufficient for water supply to Hyderabad city and so now it serves mostly as a popular public recreational area.
