18th century home of merchant Lobkov (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow / Sofiyskaya naberezhnaya
Classicism, nonresidential building, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia), 1810s construction

This is the Empire-style home of the merchant Lobkov, which was built in 1816 on the ruins of an old aristocratic estate that probably had been destroyed in the 1812 fires. In 1826 the merchant Nakhodin owned the property which later passed to the merchant Verevkin from 1849 until 1918. After the 1917 Revolution the building was nationalized and became communal apartments.

The Moscow province Atlas of Industry notes that on this site (probably in the serf quarters or annexes in the back) "there always has been a factory with 26 employees."

An extensive renovation occurred in the 1970s. Then between 2002 and 2003 the building underwent archeological investigation, restorations and expansion into the attic space under the mansard roof after which it was available for rent.
