History: In February 1690, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, by a firman/decree, authorized the British to return to Bengal.. The British led by Job Charnok sailed up the weather beaten Hoogly river and anchored in a reach near the present day Kolkata, which rose to be a premiere river Port in British India and subsequently.

The Calcutta PortAct was enacted in 1870. It led to establishment of a Port Commission which was set up on October 17, 1870 with 9 representatives of government, trade e in the Port of Calcutta.etc., for making improvements.

Thus over a long period, Calcutta Port has developed from simple river moorings to a complex pattern of moorings, river side jetties, anchorages and dock systems. Right from the Sagar Anchorage to Kolkata, on a strech over 150 kms of the river, there are river side jetties, impounded docks and other port facilities built over a time span of more than 138 years of service in 2008.
