Located at the central part of the Kolkata City to the West,this lush green area is called the Maidan. This area belongs to the Eastern Command(Fort William), of the Indian Army. The Victoria Memorial Hall is situated to the south west end of the ground which is bounded by Lenin Sarani to the North, River Hoogly (Ganges) to the East, Jawaharlal Nehru Road to the East and A.G.C. Bose Road to the South. Being centrally located, it is an ideal place for holding Political Meetings, various Trade Fairs and Exhibitions including the famous Kolkata Book Fair which are barred now owing to legal bindings against the wishes of the public in general. The Eastern Command Army Parade Celebrations on the Independence Day and the Republic Day are held each year.All the Football grounds,Ochterlony Monument, Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium, Netaji Indoor Stadium,Race Course etc, are located within its limits.

Maidan is known as '' The Lungs of Kolkata''.
