memorial, museum, auditorium, gym / gymnasium - sports, secondary education
Built in 1944 (the cornerstone is inscribed "AUDITORIUM FEB 12, 1944") this was originally the "Multipurpose Building" of the Manzanar High School.
It was one of the very few structures to remain standing after the war, if only because the Inyo County Department of Roads put it to use as a construction equipment maintenance shed.
It has recently been renovated and opened to the public by the U.S. National Park Service as an "interpretive center," functioning as both memorial and museum.
Black and white photos by Francis Stewart for the WRA show the building while it was under construction.
