The location of Project Shoal, one of seven underground nuclear tests conducted by the United States government under Project Vela. Project Shoal was detonated at 17:00:00.1 Zulu time on October 26, 1963 with a yield of 12 kilotons, in a stemmed (closed) vertical shaft at a depth of 854 feet. This location was chosen because the rock formations were different to those found in the more usual test sites, and it was thought desirable to acquire test data from a broader spectrum of rock types for the purpose of developing methods of "reading" data acquired from monitoring foreign tests
