Azad Maidan (Mumbai)

India / Maharashtra / Mumbai
sports venue, green area, pitch (sports field / ground)

During the struggle for India's independence, leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri used to address huge crowds here. Hence the name - "Azad maidan" (Freedom Ground)

One of the two crucibles for Mumbai cricket (the other being Shivaji Park). Has 21 wickets where matches can be played simultaneously. Many of the boundary lines overlap each other, and the rules often dictate the establishment of virtual boundary lines by consensus between opposing captains and umpires.

Each wicket and surrounding square is owned by 'clubs', including the Sassanian Club, Fort Vijay, Parsee Cyclists, etc. Matches of the Kanga League, Times Shield and other events take place here all year round. Pitches are generally batting wickets and crumble over the day to offer turn to spinners, except in the monsoon where the ball skids off the surface.

because of its size, it is also used often as a venue for political rallies and occasional concerts. However, efforts are being made to limit the use of the ground to cricket to prevent damage to the fields.

Amongst other things, Ijtamaas(Islamic religious gatherings) are held on the ground.

Azad Maidan is a triangular-shaped maidan in Mumbai, India. It is a regular venue for inter-school cricket matches. The name Azad means "free" in Hindi. The ground is known for its cricket pitches, for protest meetings, and for political rallies. The Bombay Gymkhana clubhouse was built in 1875, at the southern end of the maidan.[
