Jijamata Udyan (Rani Baug) / Victoria Gardens (Mumbai)

India / Maharashtra / Mumbai / Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road
park, zoo, animal sanctuary, tourist attraction

Jijamata Udyan, formerly known as Victoria Gardens, was laid out in 1861
It houses many of the rare and endangered species of animals and birds. The gardens are spread over 48 acres in Byculla. At the main entrance to the gardens is a clock tower, reminiscent of Italian renaissance, but the clock has stopped ticking a long time ago. The gardens boast of scores of trees, some of which are really old. Within the gardens is the Bhaudaji Lad musuem (formerly the Prince Albert museum) that houses a host of local archaeological finds among which merits a huge stone elephant at the entrance, which was found in 1864 at Gharapuri Island.

The area is situated in prime location. That is why the greedy authority, BMC, Ministers and Builders are not maintaining the animals properly. Their plan is simple. Don't feed animals. Let them die. Ones all animals die, they can construct 5-star hotel and posh residentials and make bumper profits. However, NGOs and PETAs can come forward and save the poor animals here.

  • The ZOO as i sensibly call it rather that Raani baug or Jijamata Garden, is a place where we take our kids to see the sorry state the animals are in. They are lifeless and just sit in one place either with their head hidden or staring away. I feel sorry for showing my kids how animals are kept whereas in the school they learn that animals live best when free in Jungles.... (non existant here)
  • If u r young indian then u should proud about the name Jijamata Udyan
  • I don't believe in changing the name. There are lots of things pending to improve our life style rather than involve in such useless demand.
  • Why it restricted to take eatables n water along with visitors. Because mostly people or visitors coming with childrens, so if we can not carry even a water bottle inside the zoo. How to kids stay till long time without any food or water. Please should do anything about this matter. twice or thrice I visited with my kid n came back without seen all animals or total zoo. because of kids getting hungry or thirsty within 30-45 minutes. That's OK if this both can allowed to carry if you had with kids otherwise only water bottle. Zoo is not a small area so that u can see total zoo within one hour. It will take around 2-3 hours minimum to see all those animals n zoo. Please don't mind about to do or improve this for this summer. So childrens can enjoy with all zoo animals too.
