The government on July 27,2016 has submitted a proposal under the FCA to MoEFCC for diversion of 564 hectares forest land at Gorewada to construct international level zoo.
Gorewada being a reserve forest, diversion of land for non-forestry activities attracts provisions Section 2 of the FCA. Various attractions of international level zoo will be opened to public for commercial gains and hence is a non-forestry activity.Indian safari will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs44 crore while the reservoir at Rs10 crore. The powers to decide works beyond Rs2 crore wrest with the state committee and hence the meeting was held to take a final decision.
