of the U.S. Department of Agriculture

The columns shown above are from the US Capitol and originally supported the old East Portico. The columns were removed during expansion of the Capitol in 1958. Though the arboretum was founded in 1927, much of the development of the park as it exists today was completed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. The CCC was a New Deal program that operated between 1933 and 1942. The program provided work for unmarried, unemployed men who were struggling to find work during the Great Depression.
