National Wildlife Refuge. The second largest public park or preserve within 40 miles of either Baltimore or Washington. Most of the section northeast of the Patuxent River (in Anne Arundel County, the "North Tract", formerly part of Ft. Meade) is open to the public for hiking, biking, and driving via Bald Eagle Drive off of Laurel-Ft. Meade Rd. (Md. Rt. 198) which leads to the Visitors Center. Most of the section southwest of the Patuxent River (in Prince Georges County along Laurel-Bowie Rd. (Md. Rt. 197) is used for research and is not open to the public. It is here that whooping cranes were and are kept in captive breeding programs.
