railway, abandoned / shut down, electrical sub-station, railway traction substation
25Hz substation for the former Reading RR main line into Center city. it converted 24kV transmission power into 12kV traction power for the overhead catenary. It supplied power to the Reading Terminal. It was left intact and functional after the viaduct was abandoned when it was replaced with the commuter tunnel in 1984.
The substation was replaced with a new substation a 1/2 mile to the north, which actually sits on a portion of the former alignment. The catenary and transmission lines were finally [sloppily] removed in 2010.
