The Port Robinson Lift Bridge spanned the Welland Canal at this location until it was destroyed by an allision with the lake freighter Steelton on August 25, 1974. After the bridge wreckage was cleared from the canal, the decision was made not to rebuild the bridge. Today the crossing is served by a small passenger-only ferry.
