Townline Causeway (Town of Welland, ON)

Also known as the Townline Plug - this is a section of the abandoned Welland Canal which was filled in when the Welland by-pass was constructed (opening in 1973). This channel can be seen a short distance east of this location. The railway tracks seen here are below the level of the water in the abandoned canal in order to facilitate the grade to the Townline Tunnel under the new canal, making a bridge impossible.

  • The boat docks at the south end are part of the South Niagara Rowing Club. Many local rowing events are held in this closed section of the canal. Some international events have also taken place.
