This is the hypocenter of the Tunguska Event of 30 June 1908. Uprooted trees, laid flat in every direction by an enormous explosion, all pointed toward this central spot. Scientists have concluded the most likely explanation is that a meteoroid or cometary fragment exploded high in the atmosphere (6-10 km) above this point. The coordinates were calculated by V.G. Fast in 1967 with good accuracy (60°53'09" ± 06" N, 101°53'40" ± 13" E).
