The drama theater became a state cultural institute in 1949, and in 1952 - the State Drama Theater. The genre of the theater is broad-spectrum - it ranges from classical drama to contemporary drama. He puts on 4 productions a year and plays about 60 performances a year. The theater is funded jointly: by the Ministry of Culture and the municipality of the city. Since 2001, the theater has been named Nevena Kokanova. Nevena Kokanova is a Bulgarian actress, called for many years "the first lady of Bulgarian cinema".
