Built in 1876, the original building was built in the Kirkbride plan. Much of the then-vacant Kirkbride was destroyed by a catastrophic fire (arson) in 1991 and the entire left wing and much of the right was demolished shortly after.

In 2008, the remainder of the right wing and several original outbuildings were demolished to make way for a new hospital building.

The administrative portion of the Kirkbride (along with its iconic clock tower) was saved, although its ultimate fate is still uncertain.
