Castrum Rubrum - Chastel Rouge. Fortified site since the 9th century under Byzantine rule, the crusaders took it in 1177 and held it with a short interruption (1188 Salah ad Din) till it fell in 1289 two years before Tartus to the Mameluke Sultan Qalaun. Designed to play a role in the outer defence of Tartus as a typical Frankish work end of 12th century.
