The ancient and medieval town known to the Greeks as Raphanaia or Raphaneai, to the Romans (who had a legionary camp here) as Raphanaea, to the Arabs as Rafaniyyah, and to the Crusaders as Raphania, a titular bishopric of the Catholic church. The ruins lie between the modern towns of Nisaf and Ba`rin, with additional, more isolated remains in the vicinity.
