Grain Tower Battery

United Kingdom / England / Isle of Grain /
 tower, military, martello tower

Grain Tower Battery was completed in 1855 and was based on a design similar to the Martello Towers.

Originally housing one 56 pound cannon and two 32 pound cannons it was upgraded in 1910 and 1912 with two 4.7" QF (Quick Fire) guns to fire on high speed torpedo boats attacking ships moored at Sheerness or Chatham.

Both 4.7" guns were removed in February 1929. In July 1940 a twin 6-pounder QF gun was installed. This was to fire on the high speed German 'E' and 'S' motor torpedo boats.
The tower was disarmed and put out of commission in 1946.
Grain Tower can be visited at low tide when the causeway is exposed for two hours, access to the inside of the tower is difficult however as the steps have gone making access to the first floor entrance difficult.
