Mitropoliei Street, 2A

Romania / Sibiu / Mitropoliei Street, 2A
Medieval / Middle Ages, mixed-used building, gable stone, historical building, 18th century construction, 16th century construction, 14th century construction

Built 14th-16th century.
The oldest part is the north-east wing (near the History Museum entrance) which has been identified to be built in the 14th century. The walls also preserves traces of the 14th century stepped gable, very characteristic for the 14th early 15th century stone houses in Sibiu/Hermannstadt.
The plot at Mitropoliei Nb 2A was initially formed out of two medieval plots, later three plots.
The two ,later three stone medieval buildings, with the narrow facade towards the main street (Mitropoliei), were united in the early 16th century, probably before the two great fires of 1556 and 1570. After the Great Fire of 1570 great changes occurred in the buildings layout.
On the facade towards Mitropoliei St. today can be seen a painted chevron/heraldry dated 1574 with the Tailors' Guild emblems. This points out that the building was destroyed in the great fire of 1570, rebuilt 1574 by the Tailors Guild.
In 1897 the building was bought by the City Hall for an extension.
