historical layer / disappeared object, ICBM launch facility
One of three Titan I missile complexes controlled by the 850th Strategic Missile Squadron, 44th Missile Wing. The 850th was activated on June 22, 1960 at nearby Ellsworth AFB, receiving its first missile on June 22, 1962. Each complex was comprised of three underground silos and a adjacent underground command bunker. The Titan's time at Ellsworth was short, as it and other 1st generation ICBMs were supplanted by the Minuteman family. Per Defense Secretary McNamara's order in November 1964 to accelerate the phase-out of Atlas and Titan Is' from service, the first missile was removed on January 4, 1965 and the last on February 1st of that year. Its duty complete, the 850th was inactivated on May 25, 1965
