An arrangement of 10 LGM-30F Minuteman II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Launch Facilities and a single Launch Control Facility, Alfa was one of five missile flights manned by airmen of the 66th Strategic Missile Squadron, 44th Missile Wing. The 44th MW was activated in January of 1962 at Ellsworth Air Force Base, outside Rapid City, South Dakota, and was stationed there until its inactivation on July 4, 1994. The missiles and their crews were inactivated during the early to mid 90's as part of the U.S. Air Force's reorganization following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the signing of several arms-reduction treaties with the former USSR.
