The Approx. location of the ironclads CSS Virginia II & CSS Fredericksburg. They were part of the James River Squadron commanded by Commodore John K. Mitchell. The Confederates blew up the CSS Fredericksburg and the CSS Virginia II on April 4, 1865. The Fredericksburg's remains lie fifty yards up river from her sister ship. She rests in a parallel position with the river, six to fifteen deep under the mud.The Virginia II lies badly broken nearly twenty feet under the silt, partially beneath the opposite shoreline from the bluff.
