Anwara Upazila (Chittagong district) with an area of 173.53 sq km, is bounded by Patiya upazila on the north, Banshkhali upazila on the south, Chandanaish upazila on the east and Bandar (Chittagong port) thana on the west. Main rivers are Karnafuli and Sangu; main forests: Dheang Pahar, Battoli and Baramat.

Anwara is located at 22.2167°N 91.9111°E. Anwara (Town) consists of one mouza with an area of 3.34 sq km. The town has a population of 4258; male 53.59% and female 46.41%; population density per sq km 1274. Literacy rate among the town people is 64.4%.

Anwara thana was established in 1876 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 10 union parishads, 78 mouzas and 78 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics: Mohsin Awlia's Dargah; Monu Miah's Cannon (now preserved in National Museum).

Religious institutions: Mosque 342, tomb 20, temple 23 and pagoda 7.

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 219446; male 50.99%, female 49.01%; Muslim 81.47%; Hindu 17.58% and others 0.95%.

Literacy and educational institutions: Average literacy 30.6%; male 38.4% and female 22.4%. Educational institutions: college 4, high school 25, primary school 102, madrasa 14. Noted educational institution: Anwara College.

Cultural organisations: Theatre group 2, jatra party 1, rural club 15, playground 15.

Main occupations: Agriculture 31.51% wage labourer 2.65%, agricultural labourer 18.46%, industry 1.78%, constructional labourer 1.2%, transport 2.95%, commerce 13.99%, service 12.27% and others 13.65%.

Land use: Single crop 35.57%, double crop 34.05% and treble crop 30.38%.

Main crops: Paddy, potato, brinjal, vegetables.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Cattle breeding centre 1, milk processing plant 2, hatchery (poultry) 120 and dairy 15.

Communication facilities- Roads: pucca road 20 km, semi pucca 59 km and mud road 60 km.

Manufactories: kafco (Karnafuli Fertiliser Company Limited).

NGO activities: Operationally important NGOs are brac, caritas, asa, Prochesta, World Vision and grameen bank.

Health centres: Upazila health complex 2, satellite clinic 4 and family planning centre 10.

  • My birthplace is Chatary, Anwara,Chittagong the highest potential land of the world history.Better I can say Anwara is the pioneer approach land in spreading the Bay of Bangal. As a freedom fighter I love Bangladesh as well Anwara and Chatary as my bornplace. Now the Anwara Upazela has 11 Unions instead of Ten, Name of the all Unin Headquater need to be incorporated in the location map of Google. Thanks
  • I born and raised in khilpara village of Anwara Upozila(sub district). In the year of 1983 January I had been left my beloved birth place and even my motherland. Oh god its really amaging and breath taking pleasure to remember those days used to live in that village. There was no electricity no brick road. Only transports were engineless boat and lonches could get to walk 2 miles in wetty mud road. Than also those are really golden days we passed.
