Letona Cannery was a fruit and vegetable processor based in the Riverina town of Leeton. The Cannery closed in February 1994 due to the Letona Cooperative owing more then $40 million (AUD) and needing more then $20 million to upgrade Cannery which dated back to World War I.

  • I like to know a bit more the closed factory. What did it used to make?
  • Thank you Bidgee. That was quite interesting history!
  • Today, I had to do Homework relating to WW1 and WW2 and where my family was at the time. After speaking to my father about it, he had said that my great great grandfather owned Letona Cannery in Leeton in the Riverina NSW. He had said they supplied canned goods to the soldiers etc. My surname is Brady. The first Manager of Letona Cannery was Jack Brady. My great great grandfather was the first Manager of Letona Cannery. I only found out today.
  • My dad used to eat Letona, the best apricot jam in Italy in the 50s and 60s. He is here inaustralia to find more!
  • Me too in Milan alt the end of the 60
  • Me too, in Piedmont. I used to eat it straight from the tin...one of the great flavours I recall from my childhood.
  • Hi Megan - Jack Brady was my Great Grandfather too! I have been trying to find some photos of him and his family. I'm pretty sure my Great Grandmother's name was Elizabeth and she came from Moonta in South Australia. Jack was born in Salisbury in SA I believe - or so my late mother told me. My mother's mother's name was Eileen and her little sister was Bessie. There were three brothers I think: Victor (Vic); Jack and Bert. I would love to know which of the brothers was your great grandfather? and more about our wonderful family - I am looking to find out whether there are any photos of Jack Brady. Best regards, Ruth Fry (South Australia)
