The first grocery store on this site in South Moorhead was a Red Owl Super Market, which opened in 1962 in the first Brookdale Shopping Center. In the late 1970s, the grocery store moved from the north end of the mall to the south end of the mall. It became Red Owl Country Store Foods in 1982, and remained under that name until 1985. In 1985, the store was sold to two individuals, and the grocery store was named McDonald's Solum's Country Store Foods. That lasted until 1986. In 1987, Red Owl bought the building back, and opened Wise Buy Foods, which was open until 1993. The Brookdale Shopping Center was without a grocery store until 1998, after the original building was demolished. When the new shopping center was built, a detached grocery store building was also constructed. SunMart Foods moved to the Brookdale Shopping Center from Southmoor Square. In 2014, after Nash Finch Company merged with Spartan Foods, SunMart Foods became Family Fare Supermarket. It closed in March 2018.
