SS Cape Fear (T-AK-5061)

USA / California / Benicia /
warship, historical layer / disappeared object, United States Navy

Laid down in 1969 as the commercial LASH (Lighter Aboard SHip) vessel SS LASH Espania, this ship served in the commercial trades from 1971 to 1985 before she was delivered to the Maritime Administration and made part of the Military Sealift Command's Ready Reserve Fleet.

Renamed SS Cape Fear, she, along with her sisterships Cape Florida, Cape Flattery & Cape Farewell, form half of the USN LASH fleet which is used by Naval Construction Battalions (SeaBees) to provide heavy-lift transport for lighters (barges) for worldwide deployment.

The Cape Fear was downgraded from the RRF in 2006 and was towed to Suisun Bay, where she is held in emergency sealift status while functioning mainly as a parts source for her three RRF sisterships presently held at Beaumont, TX.
