Col. Hiram and his deputy Ephraim Dan Shomron were the founders of this elite paratroops unit named after the second most common snake in Israel, Viper. Since its establishment and appoint the battalion has participated in all the battles of the Paratroopers Brigade. The current security Viper Battalion was the first to do patrols in southern West Bank.

The 202nd Battalion, as an active service unit also shares facilities in its current garrison at the Shoham Base with one of the two reserve Paratroop Brigades also attached to the 98th Paratroop Division, the 623th "Hod Ha-Hanit"/"Head of the Spear" Paratroopers Brigade and it is their unit badge.
