Tel-Hashomer is well known for its central Israel Defence Forces (IDF) base (Camp Yaakov Dori), which contains important installations including under the Recruitment heading :

The Recruitment Bureau (Lishkat HaGiyus) - handles new draftees before they are recruited. Meitav, until May 2006 known as Bsis Klita 'Miyun (Bakum), an induction base for drafted soldiers, where they get "militarized" (receive uniforms, basic gear, etc.) and are assigned to their units.

It is also the base for the HQ command of the following IDF Army Corps :

Logistics Corps
Ordnance Corps
Medical Corps.

and the 7100th Maintenance Center(a factory which repairs Merkava tanks)

This facility is due to close by the end of 2014 / early 2015 when the functions are due to be transferred to the new Central Training Base, in the Negev Desert Kiryat Ben-Gurion (IrHaBahadim) instead

Adjacent to the base there are both military and civilian hospitals (in adjoining complexes) known as the Tel HaShomer Hospital. The civilian hospital is named Sheba Medical Center and is under the municipal jurisdiction of Ramat Gan. Magen David Adom
