brownfield land, apartment complex
In July 1992, approximately 1,000 residents were forced to evacuate this apartment complex in a 48 hour period due to dangerous levels of methane gas that had built up within the apartment units. A further investigation showed that the complex was built upon the old Brinkley Anderson landfill (brownfield) that was used by the City of Austin and Travis County from 1950-1968. The area was subsequently abandoned for several years then rehabilitated.
