The West fort of Wagingera was first capital town of Surapura [Shorapur] Nayakas later it was rebuilt by Aurangazeb of Mughal dynasty in 1705 AD. Here Aurangazeb camped for months to capture it and it was his last battle. Thereafter he died on his way to Kultabad [1707]. Raja Pid Nayaka II gave strong resistance against Mughal attack and later he escaped from the fort and later he recaptured from Mughals. In 1710 he founded new capital Surapura near to Wagingera and it became capital city of Nayakas. -S. K. Aruni for details see S. K.
