First mentioned about 1548, the present temple was constructed in 1629-34 on the site of a wooden church which burnt down. It was a single cupola cubic church in a classical style. In 1816-20 a new refectory and with side-altars to St. Nikolai the Miracle Worker and the prophet Elisha that were taken from the Eliseevsky church in the neighbourhood which burnt down during a fire of 1812.

Compactness of volume refectory is underlined by the rounded corners and on lateral facades are placed porticoes with pilasters.

The belltower was constructed the same years; temple windows were also received new stucco moldings.

In 1897 the belltower was reconstructed at which time the bottom circle remained, and two top levels were replaced.

The church was restored at various times. The temple was never closed; many outstanding Russian actors were its parishioners.
