National Capitol Columns Ruins (Washington, D.C.)

USA / Maryland / Colmar Manor / Washington, D.C.
 column, historic ruins, tourist attraction

Taken from the Capitol Bldg after addition was added to the front of the building. Colums are now on permanent display at the National Arboretum.

Sandstone columns with carved Corinthian-style acanthus-leaf capitals circa 1828 from the East Portico of the US Capitol. In storage since about 1960 after a restoration, the columns were moved here in the 1980's. Traces of old white paint are visible in places. The steps which once led to the East Portico were also placed here to form a flat plaza; the stones are set upon their sides so that old markings and ciphers incised by the long-ago quarry workers and stone carvers are visible.
