The University Botanic Garden in Balchik was created in 1955 by academician Prof. Daki Yordanov, Rector of the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski in the 1956-1962 period. It's area of 190 decares is divided in three parts that are historically and functionally detached:
-A park with a landscape built during the reign of the Queen of Romania Mary which at present is an aggregate property of cultural merit - a monument of garden and park art.
-A garden - adapted for visits of people with disabilities (former 'Nursery-garden'), opened in 2005.
-A restricted area - a territory of indigenous vegetation formed as a result of the ceased anthropogenic impact of the natural ecological systems (former vineyards, fruit orchards).
The greatest attraction in the Botanic Garden is the exposition of large cactuses and succulents that is the second largest one in Europe. Of interest to experts and tourists are also the successfully introduced in the garden exotic species - the ancient Ginkgo tree, the metasequoia, the oriental raisin tree, and the rubber tree, the Holm oak, the evergreen magnolia grandiflora, and others.
