The reserve protects a part of the Middle Dnipro/Dnieper River Valley, and floodplains of the Oril River.
It covers two river terraces – the first strip is 2 km wide along the left bank of the Dnipro/Dnieper river, and the second one is a higher inland terrance.
The construction of the Dnipro/Dnieper Hydroelectric Station (DniproHES) in the 1940s raised the water level within the boundaries by 2 meters, which affected the nature of the floodplains.
