Goldman Sachs Tower (Jersey City, New Jersey)

USA / New Jersey / Jersey City / Jersey City, New Jersey / Hudson Street, 30
office building, skyscraper, 2004_construction, Modern (architecture)

Designed in 2001 by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects for Hines Interests to house much of Goldman Sachs' company's real estate, technology, operations, and administrative departments. Their projections indicated that its workforce would grow to thirty thousand people by the end of the decade which necessitated the expansion at 85 Broad Street. The company has private ferries to shuttle workers between the two buildings like Venice.

The building’s profile is telescoped, and its corners are cut into a series of small steps, which both reduces the visual impact of the tower’s bulk and provides a plethora of corner offices. Achitecture critic Paul Goldberger coined it a "a kind of Shanghai on the Hudson".

  • It's finished now.
  • I heard that the people who work for Goldman Sachs weren't happy about having to commute to NJ, so a new Goldman Sachs building is being built in Lower Manhattan, right across the river. I think Goldman Sachs will still own this building, but a majority of their workers will be in the Lower Manhattan offices. Man, having a lot of money and power makes things so much easier, don't like to commute? Fine, we'll move the office to suite your needs...
